North Seattle House

This mid-century modern home in North Seattle got a full down-to-studs remodel for baby boomers. Our firm was called to specify hardware, develop the kitchen and bathroom plans, and design finishes, furnishings, paint colors, textures, and art. The concept was Zen. To create this feel, we approached the interiors with a simple minimalism that emphasized natural textures and elements like wood, stone, wool, and charcoal and supported their mossy tree view over a greenbelt.

We started with bookmatched wood kitchen cabinetry to create an organic pattern in the kitchen. We added Florida pearl quartzite countertops and blue-green tile backsplash. Next came three custom-sized woven rugs from Driscoll Robbins that added a soft blue-grey foundation. The blue-grey sofa textile was close to the rugs and matched the tones in the tile. For a warm accent, a soft gold slubbed textile was chosen for the Thayer Coggin swivel chairs. This textile stood out in contrast to the fireplace's Bedrosian large-format charcoal tile surface.

Art was a design driver! The mid-century inspired art by Palm Springs-based artist Kippi Leonard over the fireplace camouflages a TV when it is not in use. The natural wood grain was continued in the table, anchored by leather dining chairs and a custom oak buffet made by furniture maker Jonathan Pauls Inc. that was stained matte black. This buffet supports art commissioned by abstract painter Nino Yuniardi. The powder room off the entry continues the blue-green hue of the kitchen tile with embossed vinyl wallpaper. The asymmetrical placement of the Hammerton Forge Raindrop pendant is balanced by the strong veining in the wall-hung miter-cut countertop. Departing from the Zen theme is a faceted Chrysalis chandelier from Hubbington Forge over the stairway.
